From the rolling hills of Lambayeque, Peru, where coffee blossoms thrive, emerged the CECANOR Cooperative—a story of women united by a shared vision to address the challenges they faced in the male-dominated coffee industry and improve the livelihoods of their families.

The Foundations of CECANOR

The inception of CECANOR can be traced back to a group of visionary women who recognized that by joining together, they could overcome systemic inequalities, including limited access to land ownership, financial services, and education. The cooperative was founded with a mission to empower women through training in agricultural techniques, business management, and gender equality. This commitment to education and empowerment has allowed women to take on leadership roles within their communities, thus paving the way for future generations.

Today, their legacy continues as these women instill in their daughters the expectation that they, too, can grow up to become leaders in their communities—just like their mothers and grandmothers. CECANOR has played a crucial role in transforming the lives of its members, enabling them to produce high-quality coffee while advocating for fair wages and for the rights of women producers.

The Long Grind

The road to empowerment for the women of CECANOR was filled with significant obstacles deeply rooted within the social and economic realities of Peru. These challenges have profoundly influenced their journey, yet the women have demonstrated extraordinary determination and resilience in overcoming them.

One of the challenges the women faced were the cultural barriers of their country. Traditional gender roles in Peru have often relegated women to domestic responsibilities, limiting their opportunities to engage in farming and business. Societal expectations have created an environment where women’s contributions in agriculture are frequently undervalued, reinforcing the notion that men are the primary decision-makers. This cultural framework has hindered women from pursuing their ambitions and asserting their rights within their communities.

Additionally, economic inequality remains a significant hurdle, with women typically receiving lower wages than their male counterparts for the same work. This disparity not only affects individual earnings but also leads to financial instability for their families. The Cafe Femenino initiative, launched in collaboration with CECANOR and other women’s cooperatives, aimed to promote female producers in the coffee sector and ensure their voices were heard in the global market.

Being part of the Café Femenino program has provided CECANOR members with a wealth of benefits, fundamentally transforming their lives and the communities in which they operate. This initiative, dedicated to empowering women coffee producers, has been instrumental in fostering economic stability and promoting social change.

One of the most significant advantages of the Café Femenino program is its commitment to fair trade pricing. By ensuring that women receive fair compensation for their coffee, the program has dramatically improved the financial stability of CECANOR members. This provides women with a reliable income and empowers them to make decisions about their finances and to invest in their families. The increased income allows them to cover essential expenses, such as education for their children and healthcare for their families, thus enhancing their overall quality of life.

The Café Femenino program also prioritizes education by offering comprehensive training in sustainable farming practices, quality control, and business management.
